Busy week of action for Ram grapplers

The Greene County wrestling team lost both duals at West Marshall Tuesday, Jan. 19. The hosts won 43-42 and Roland-Story was victorious 42-36. The Rams are 8-9 in duals this season.

The Rams were unable to fill five weight classes, which was costly in team scoring. The West Marshall/Greene County match ended in a 42-42 tie but the Trojans were awarded the win on forfeit criteria. Out of the 16 contested matches on the night, GC won 13. 

McKinley Robbins, the top ranked wrestler at 120-pounds in Class 2A, had his first close match of the season when he edged Logan Powers (19-3) of R-S, 2-1. Robbins also posted a pin to improve to 19-0 this season and 56-2 in his career. 

Other Rams going 2-0 were Brenner Gallagher, John Sprague, Brady Stauffer, Nathan Black and Noble Hoyt.

HOIAC TOURNAMENT

Greene County hosted their first high school wrestling tournament Friday night, Jan. 22, in the new gymnasium in Jefferson. Coach Zach Beekman’s Rams finished second in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference tournament behind West Marshall of State Center. The Trojans compiled 197 points to 180 for the Rams. Roland-Story was third with 172, followed by Prairie City-Monroe 151, South Hamilton 139, Nevada 84, and Saydel 62.

The Rams had eight wrestlers in the finals with four champions in McKinley Robbins, Sawyer Schiltz, Brenner Gallagher and Brady Stauffer. Jackson Turner, Gavin Scheuermann, Nate Black and Noble Hoyt all finished in second place.

Gallagher improved to 8-1 on the season, Robbins is 21-0 and Schiltz goes to 15-5. Stauffer picked up his 100th career win in the semifinals and stands at 21-1.

ED WINGER TOURNAMENT

Following a long night in Jefferson, the Rams got on the bus early Saturday morning to travel to Urbandale for the Ed Winger Classic. The tournament had 20 teams with some of the best in Iowa, including 3A power Southeast Polk.

McKinley Robbins fought hard for his 120-pound championship, posting a pin, a 7-6 decision, an 8-6 sudden victory and a 4-2 sudden victory. In both extra periods, he secured the win with a take down. He defeated the fifth and 10th ranked wrestlers in 3A in the semifinals and finals. Robbins is number one in Class 2A.

Waukee and Southeast Polk duked it out for first place with Waukee edging out the SEP Rams by 5-1/2 points 217.5-212. Greene County posted 77 points for 11th place.
